Bunny Williams on
Outdoor Lighting

Now that spring is here and summer soon to come we start using the outside spaces.  Porches and terraces need a fresh look.  One of my favorite loves of the year is sitting on our screen porch on a summer night with a glass of wine listening to the frogs in the reflecting pond and the sound of crickets clicking in the warm evening breeze.  Lighting sets the atmosphere,

and for me it only come from candles. Turing on a 40 watt light bulb seems as though a spot light has been turned on.  The atmosphere comes from soft lighting against the dark night.  I use many kinds of hurricanes, some on tables, some sitting on the edge of the terrace.  I place hurricanes on pedestals to have light from another height.  Candles must be in glass so they do not blow out from the summer breezes.

I also recommend using mirrors on porch walls.  They can read almost as a window and if one brings over a table with a candle holder sitting in front it will reflect light for more atmosphere.
