Things to Consider Before Buying a Backpack Leaf Blower

Things to Consider Before Buying a Backpack Leaf Blower

There are different types of backpack leaf blowers available that come with different features.

Now, you should know how to choose the one that’s perfect for your requirement.

Consider the following points while getting one for your yard.

1. Power Source

Generally, you can find leaf blowers working with two different power sources: gas and electric. Both these types come with their own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Come, let’s find out in detail.

Gas-powered Backpack Leaf Blowers

  • You can use this on challenging jobs and large properties too. It can frequently run and for an extended period of time.
  • This type of backpack leaf blower runs on gasoline. This means, compared to the electric ones, it has more power and can clear the leaves and debris more effectively.
  • If you have less body strength, you might find it difficult to operate. Why? Well, it comes with a manual pull start.
  • You need to perform some maintenance work monthly. Clean up the blower’s carburetor and fan blades. From the gas tank, flush out the old fuel. Check if there is a spark plug and if you find one, replace it with a new one. Check the connections, filter, fuel line, and cables.
  • Doing all this maintenance work is not that easy. It requires a lot of time.

Electric Backpack Leaf Blowers

  • This is the perfect option for getting rid of all the leaves and debris from your porch, driveway, lawn, deck, and patio.
  • It’s lightweight. Compared to the gas-powered leaf blower, it works quieter and needs less maintenance.
  • Powered by an electric motor, this type of leaf blower is relatively easy to start.
  • With the corded version, you can work only in places that have outlets.
  • With the cordless version, you can use it anywhere you want. It comes with a high voltage battery. All you need is to charge it periodically.
  • It works best only in small-sized lands.

2. MPH or Airspeed Rating

What exactly is an MPH?

Well, MPH means miles per hour. It’s the speed at which the air from the leaf blower is expelled.

It suggests how powerfully the leaf blower can clean your yard in less time.

While shopping for a backpack leaf blower, you’ll find airspeed ratings as 180MPH or 200MPH. If you want your leaf blower to perform better, get one that comes with more than 200 MPH.

Now, there are many leaf blowers that come with a variable speed trigger. Use this to adjust the airspeed.

3. CFM or Airflow Rating

What is a CFM?

CFM stands for cubic feet per minute. It’s used to measure the volume of air that a leaf blower produces in a minute.

If the CFM rating is higher, it means it can push the leaves out of your garden with more power. Generally, leaf blowers with high CFM ratings come with wider nozzles.

Why?

So that they can blow out a huge volume of air at a time.

While buying a backpack leaf blower for your garden, you’ll find products with 550 CFM or 600 CFM.
Want your leaf blower to perform the best?

Look for the ones with an airflow rating of 600 or more.

Many models come with variable speed trigger options so that you can adjust the airflow according to your preference.

4. Noise

Generally, decibels (dB.) is used in order to measure the noise of a leaf blower. The more the ratings of the decibels, the more the noise the equipment produces.

So, before zeroing on a backpack leaf blower, make sure to check the rating of the decibel.

If you’re looking for something that produces less noise, go for the ones that come with a noise rating of less than 65 dB.

Now, compared to the electric leaf blowers, the gas-powered ones come with a much louder sound. Also, you need to look at the engine too.

The more the cc of the engine, the less the noise.

5. Battery Type and Engine

If you go for the cordless models of leaf blowers, know that they either use nickel-cadmium or lithium-ion batteries.

Now, if you take both these types of batteries of the same voltage, you’ll find that the nickel-cadmium battery is larger than the lithium-ion one.

Also, the latter comes at a much lighter weight. The nickel-cadmium models come at a lower price than the lithium-ion battery. The latter holds the charge for long.

You can get two varieties of engines if you go for the gas backpack leaf blower – 4-stroke and 2-stroke engines.

The CC unit is used to measure its power. Compared to the 2-stroke engine model, the 4-stroke engine is more powerful and more fuel-efficient.

Also, the 4-stroke engine model is more efficient, larger, and more expensive than the 2-stroke engine variant.

Therefore, if you’re going to use the backpack leaf blower for commercial purposes, I suggest you opt for the ones with 4-stroke engines. However, if you’re going to use a leaf blower for your home, go for those with 2-stroke engines.

6. Motor Power

No matter what the power source is, the leaf blower you choose must be robust so that you can clean leaves from your yard quickly and easily.

The power ratings of gas-powered leaf blowers are there in HP or CC.

You can find the engine capacity in CC, such as 50CC or 40CC. And you’ll find the ratings of engine power in HP such as 3HP or 2HP.

The higher these ratings are, the better the performance it offers.

Now, in the case of electric backpack leaf blowers, you’ll find the voltage rating. Naturally, the higher the voltage, the better the performance.

So, if there are two batteries with 50-volt and 70-volt each, the latter will perform better.

7. Battery Size or Tank

It doesn’t matter which power source model you choose. Always check if the battery or gas tank is large enough to handle the entire job.

Yes, you can fill up the tank with fuel every time you run out of it. But, this can make you tired in no time. With a backpack leaf blower that has a larger fuel tank, you don’t have to take breaks for refilling the tank, as you can perform the entire operation in one go.

If the leaf blower you choose comes with a see-through fuel tank, it’ll be great. This way, you’ll know how much fuel is left in the tank without even opening the tank.

Now, with electric cordless battery models, make sure that the battery is fully charged before you start using it. Or, you might need to have a second battery handy so that you can complete the work without any break.

8. Variable Speed

Do you want to remove dry leaves without doing any harm to the delicate plants that are there in your garden?

That is where the variable speed option comes in handy.

With this, you get to control the airflow while cleaning your garden or yard.

So, I suggest, go for a backpack leaf blower that comes with this option so that you can set the speed of the blower according to your needs.

9. Weight

When you have a machine on your back, you ought to think about its weight!

Compared to handheld leaf blowers, the backpack leaf blowers are easy to handle. And you don’t get strained that easily.

But, weight is something that matters when you’re choosing a leaf blower for your yard.

Some models, especially the gas-powered ones, make you feel uncomfortable even when you have padded straps. Also, your height plays a part in this.

In order to get a clear idea about how comfortably you can carry it on your back, always have a look at its weight before buying one.

You’ll find most products within 10 to 30 pounds.

Compared to the gas-powered backpack leaf blowers, the electric-powered ones are lighter.

10. Cruise Control

This feature works just like the cruise control that you get to see in a car.

Once you reach your preferred speed to remove the leaves, all you need is to turn this cool feature on.

This will let the engine stay at that same speed and operate.

The best part?

You don’t have to keep holding the throttle. The operation will be completed itself.

11. Anti-Vibration Harness

The backpack leaf blower is meant to be worn on your back, right?

This means that the engine will be very close to your body, and you’ll receive all the vibrations from the engine while blowing off the leaves. In the long run, it can have a bad effect on your shoulders and back.

So, it’s wise to choose a backpack leaf blower that comes with an anti-vibration harness. This will not only reduce the vibrations but also allow you to operate comfortably.

12. Ergonomics – Balance and Strap Design

It’s always best to go for a leaf blower that has some ergonomics features.
Why?

Well, with those features, you can work comfortably. And this, in turn, can maximize your output. Check this out before you make a purchase:

  • See if you can adjust the length of the torso. The adjustable ones can reduce your stress while operating
  • See if the hip belts and shoulder straps are well-padded or not. The padded ones will give you more comfort
  • Get a harness that has wide shoulder straps. This will distribute the leaf blower’s weight across your shoulder.
  • Don’t pick one with thin shoulder straps. This can put the complete weight of the leaf blower in a specific body part, giving rise to discomfort and pain
  • Some leaf blowers come with shoulder straps that are specially made to receive proper ventilation and air. They can prevent moisture and sweat build-up while using the equipment.

13. Start-up

You need to start up the engine of the leaf blower before you place it on your back. If the engine takes time to get started, you’ll be annoyed. This happens mostly in gas-powered engines.

While using a gas-powered leaf backpack, if it doesn’t start even after 2 to 3 pull at the start cord, know that there’s something wrong with that machine, or maybe you’re not doing it correctly. So, resolve the problem.

While using an electric-powered leaf backpack, all you need is to switch on the power outlet and turn on the motor. This will start up the backpack leaf blower.

14. Maintenance

Not all backpack leaf blowers require the same level of maintenance.

For example, the battery-powered ones don’t need much maintenance. But, on the contrary, the gas-powered ones require quite a bit of care.

Do you want to go for gas-powered leaf blowers?

Then use a premixed fuel that’s been specified by the manufacturer. This way, you can keep the engine up and running for a long duration.

So, what are you waiting for? Get the one that fits your needs the most!

If you have any doubt about these machines, then you may find get rid of it in this section:

Q. Do I need a backpack leaf blower?

Q. Are backpack leaf blowers worth it?

Ans: Of course, a leaf blower is one of the most versatile and easy-to-use machines you can use to clean yards, patios, driveways, and many other outdoor areas.
Not only can you get rid of leaves, but you can also use it to clean dust, dirt, debris, mulch, and even snow. There are way too many uses for it to ignore.

Q. Should I choose a gas, cordless, or corded backpack leaf blower?

Ans: It all comes down to your needs. If you’re going for maximum power, then a gas-powered model is your best bet. But if you prefer maximum efficiency, then go for a corded model. Yet, if what you’re looking for is maximum versatility and portability, then you can’t go wrong with a cordless backpack leaf blower.

Q. What is the cheapest leaf blower?

Ans: That would be the Greenworks BPB80L00 80V Cordless Backpack Leaf Blower. It offers everything you need in a practical and easy-to-use design. Thanks to its battery-powered system, it is amazingly efficient and still powerful enough.

Q. What is more important between MPH and CFM?

Ans: Both are super important to consider. But the best leaf blowers should focus on CFM (cubic-feet meter per minute) over MPH (miles-per-hour). As cubic feet per minute refers to the amount of air the machine can produce, it is way more important than the miles per hour. The more air it provides, the more it can clean.

Q. Are there any precautions to use a backpack leaf blower?

Ans: Yes, there are several precautions you should take before and during the operation of a backpack leaf blower. Here are some of them:
• Use protective equipment when operating them, mainly goggles or glasses, a dust mask, noise-canceling ear-plugs or headphones, and long-sleeve shirts/pants.
• If you have long hair, tie it up, so it doesn’t come loose. Remove jewelry and other types of accessories that may fall off while operating the leaf blower.
• Check the backpack leaf blower before using it. Be sure it has no physical damage or unwanted debris stuck before turning it on.
• Even the best backpack leaf blowers can be super-heavy. Don’t use them if you’re exhausted or if you can’t handle them comfortably. Otherwise, you may damage yourself or the machine.
• If you’re using a gas-powered engine, don’t tip it upside down to prevent fuel/oil drips. For corded models, try to keep the cord out of your way to avoid any tangling or fall.
• In case you’re using an extension cord, try to use heavy-duty ones. Corded backpack blowers use a lot of energy and need reliable accessories.
• Try not to use backpack blowers on unstable places like roofs, ladders, stairs, or similar places. If you have to, then try using extra protective equipment.
These precautions should be enough to ensure a safe and straightforward leaf-blowing experience.

Q. How to maintain a backpack leaf blower?

Ans: A cordless backpack blower will only need constant battery recharges and cleaning. The same happens with a corded blower. But if you have a gas-powered machine, then you’ll have to consistently do a few more things, such as:
• Before doing any maintenance, read the user’s manual first.
• Always fill the engine’s tank with the right fuel and oil (if any).
• Check filters consistently, clean them, and replace them if necessary.
• Check and replace spark plugs when needed.
• Keep the machine clean and well-stored to prevent damage.
These tips should be enough to keep any gas-powered machine safe and working for years.
How to know how much oil to add to the backpack blower?
Every blower is different, so knowing how much oil depends heavily on the machine you have. Consider reading the user’s manual to make sure of the ideal amount. You may not even need to add oil at all, and instead buy a fuel/oil mix that’s perfect for your backpack blower.
