Buying Guide to Best Self Propelled Lawn Mower

We have put together a comprehensive guide on what to look out for in a great self-propelled lawnmower. Frequently asked questions about a self-propelled lawnmower and what are the advantages of these mowers over others are addressed in this section. We recommend that you take seriously the contents in this section to avoid the hassles that come with returns and dealing with customer care reps.

What is a Self-Propelled Lawn Mower?

Self-propelled lawn mowers are improved technology to the traditional push-behind lawnmowers. Traditional push mowers take a lot of physical exertion on the part of the user to push the mower across the lawn.  We all know how physically training pushing a mower across large acres of land can be. It even becomes more traumatizing for people with back pains or muscle strains.

Self-propelled lawn mowers operate to solve the problem of large physical requirements of traditional push lawnmowers. Self-propelled lawn mowers don’t need the high physical requirements of push lawn mowers; they propel themselves by technologically advanced machinery.

The only thing required from the user is to guide them. Once they are in operation along a guided part, they keep at it until they are redirected or compelled to stop.  If you own a lawn in a steep or hill, these mowers are the ideal choice to make. Most self-propelled mowers come equipped with an easy press button by the handle. This allows the user easy control the mower. Hold the button down to guide the mower forward and release to bring it to a halt.

Why use a Self-Propelled Lawn Mower?

For obvious reasons, self-propelled lawn mowers are in demand these days.  Firstly, they don’t take up much physical strength to operate.  If you can reach and squeeze on the handle then you can use the mower.

Most propelled lawn mowers come with variable speeds that allow the user to control the mower via a control lever. All that is needed from the operator is to walk behind the mower to provide some guidance. A gentle push in the right direction is all it needs.

When it comes to self-propelled lawn mowers there is a wide variety to choose from. Front-wheel drives, rear-wheel drives and a host of others are just some of the options available.

What you need to consider before Buying a Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

There are numerous self-propelled lawn mowers out there; you will run into problems if you are not careful at choosing the right one. You need to consider the type of mower best suited for your needs before looking at intricate details like the engine power and wheels. Here are some things to consider before you buy a self-propelled lawnmower.

1. What Type Suits your needs

There are two types of self-propelled lawn mowers: Battery-powered and Gas-powered self-propelled lawn mowers. The type you choose will depend on personal preferences and mowing needs. Some users prefer the engine power that comes with Gas-propelled lawn mowers while others prefer to use cordless battery lawn mowers. The choice is yours to make.

Gas-powered lawn mowers have some of the most powerful engines in the industry and are best suited for heavy-duty mowing task. However, they are not the most eco-friendly machines around. You will have to deal with gasoline fumes and waste as well as high vibration noises and pollution. As long as there is gasoline in the tanks, they will never run out of power. Contrast that with battery-powered lawnmowers and you will see while some users still prefer gas-powered -propelled lawnmowers.

On the other hand battery propelled lawn mowers are quieter to operate. Have less environmental pollution and are easier to maintain than gas-propelled lawnmowers. The major drawback is that you will have to deal with weaker engine power and frequently recharge the batteries.

Finally, battery-powered lawn mowers are easier to start than gas-powered lawnmowers. The latter still makes use of a pull cord to crank the engine to life.

2. Size and Power of the Engines

You need to take into consideration the power and size of the engine. If you have a large lawn to mow on a regular basis you will be better off with a mower with the right horsepower. Opt for a mower with an average horsepower for moderately sized lawns and gardens.

3. 3-In-1 Ability

Modernized lawn mowers now come in 3-in-1 cutting ability. This ability gives you the choice of deciding what happens to the cut grass. You can collect grass clippings in a bag, spread it out on the ground as mulch or fling it to the sides.

4. Wheel Drive Type

There are three types of wheel drive to choice from: Front-wheel drives, rear-wheel drives and all (4) wheel drives

Front-wheel drives: Front wheels drive mowers are the most popular and simplest to operate of the lot. They help the user navigate the mower by just tipping the back the front wheels to lift the mower off the ground. Choose a front-wheel drive over rear wheel drives if your yard is on flat terrain.

Rear-wheel Drive: Rear-wheel drives are best at providing traction and support. Opt for rear-wheel drive mowers if your lawn is a hilly slope. The rear wheels will offer better support and traction on hilly plains than front-wheel drives.

All-Wheel Drives: All-wheel drives are the least common of all three types.  Manufacturers claim they provide more support in both flat and uneven surfaces. Modern variant allows the user to switch between front and rear wheels to provide a high level of maneuverability against obstacles. The only drawback is that they are more expensive to buy.

5. Height Adjustments

Adjustment in this regard refers to the cutting deck height. To customize your mowing experience, the mower you choose should have an option to adjust the deck height for grass cutting. Stay clear of mowers that don’t give you options to incrementally adjust the deck height.

6. Variable Speed Control System

Cheaper mower models allow a single speed adjustment. This means the operator will have to work at the pace of the mower. Better models come in variable speed controls that give the operator more options during use. This function can come in handy when there are obstacles to navigate past or when you are in a hurry to get mowing chores done in time.

7. Bagging Feature

Bagging is a feature you want to be on the lookout for. Bagging helps you collect grass clippings from mowing to be disposed of later in a waste bin. Mulching on the other hand will leave grass clippings on the ground to act as composite for healthy grass growth.

If you want to see a clean and clear cut lawn choose a mower with a good bagging feature over others. The only drawback is that you will need to occasionally stop operation to empty the contents of the bag. It’s better though, to always mulch grass clippings than bag them.

8. Ease-of –Use

One of the best ways to determine how easy it is to use a lawnmower is by reading lots of customers verified reviews. There are a number of options and control systems embedded into self-propelled lawn mowers that makes them easy to use.

Look for mowers with easy to use control system as well as a nice transmission system to power the wheels. We recommend that you stick to self-propelled lawn mowers with variable speed control systems.

9. Warranty

Don’t buy a mower without looking at the warranty period.  Self-propelled lawn mowers have more moving parts than traditional push lawnmowers. Ideally, you should look for self-propelled lawn mowers with a warranty period of 3 to 5 years. Anything short of that is unacceptable.
